Does muting an app in Levelune mute your microphone?

Understand the difference between what you hear and what a meeting app sends before relying on a mute control.

Muting a meeting app’s sound and muting your microphone solve different problems. Levelune controls app playback volume and mute on your Mac. Do not use that playback control as confirmation that other people cannot hear your microphone.

Separate the two directions of audio

Playback is sound coming from an app to your selected output, such as headphones or speakers. A microphone is an input that a meeting or recording app can use. Lowering the meeting app’s playback can make the conversation quiet for you while leaving that app’s microphone setting unchanged.

For privacy during a meeting, use the meeting app’s own microphone control and check its visible status. If you are using a hardware microphone mute switch, understand how that device indicates its state too. Do not infer microphone status from a silent speaker.

Use the right control for the goal

  • To hear music more quietly alongside a call, adjust the music app’s playback level.
  • To stop hearing an app temporarily, use its playback mute.
  • To stop sending your voice, use and verify the microphone control in the app or device handling the call.

These are separate checks. A muted microphone does not necessarily silence incoming sound, and muted incoming sound does not establish that the microphone is off.

Try the distinction before an important call

In a non-sensitive test call with a willing helper, first confirm that you can hear each other. Mute your microphone in the meeting app and have the helper confirm the result. Restore it deliberately, then test playback volume separately. Keep the changes sequential so you can tell which direction each control affects. Do not use a private live conversation as a diagnostic recording.

Remember browser and output boundaries

If music and a meeting are in the same browser, Levelune adjusts the browser’s combined playback. It does not provide a separate slider for each tab. Use an in-page music control if available, or a separate app when that suits your setup. Levelune also follows the output selected in macOS; it does not route different apps to different speakers.

Our music-and-call guide covers playback balancing. Apple’s output-settings guide explains the Mac’s speaker selection. Before discussing something private, verify the actual microphone state in the calling app rather than relying on the mix you hear.
